The next few days the Captain looked for a terraformed planet he could take me to. He didn't find one. I could tell he didn't want me in his company--I couldn't blame him--so he gave me tasks that kept me busy and out of his hair. He sent me racing back and forth across the ship to scrape the hull. He had me tar the rigging, swab the deck, splice ropes, tie knots, reef the sails, jibe the sails, and I don't know what else. He probably wanted me to drop dead of exhaustion, but I was used to working while tired. I kept up at a steady, energetic pace. And I found time to ask the Captain questions he wanted to avoid.

"What's your name?" I asked one day.

"Captain," the Captain said shortly.

"Oh," I said. "Did anybody else survive Aigua?"

"Yes," the Captain said.

"Oh. How come when you took me on board you didn't think I was a Koryo spy sent to dismantle you?"

The Captain laughed. "Because your level of paranoia is not normal, and not something shared by the general populace."

He added, "And because you're not that bright."

"Oh," I said.

I didn't ask him questions for the rest of the day.
